It's not a nipple tingler, but this article is very thoughtful, concise, and terrifying.

Democracy wins!

We're still f'd, though. Possibly more so.

... but (to debate myself) I don't really get the republicans in being against this bill (way more of them were against it then dems.)

I mean, this is a weird moment to suddenly get all populist, after decades (centuries?) of being the party of big biz and wall street

Yeah it SUX that we are talking about spending this kind of money on such a program ... but are republicans suggesting a better plan? Any other plan at all?

I don't claim to know what would work (especially since it partially seems to be a confidence game with wall st) but unless they enjoy 700pt losses in the stock market - why let people think the bill would pass then back out?

P.s. Thanks for the help, McCain!

I didn't get the sense that they're being populist. I think they have completely different reasons from the democrats for being against it. My impression was that conservative republicans are just taking this opportunity to emphasize that government regulation of the market is bad, as they always thought... or something like if left to itself, this deity called the Market regulates itself.

They are all against it because it's 5 weeks before the election, and they want to be able to tell their constituents, "I stood up to George Bush and corporate America!"

The first rule of politics: CYA.
