Though, she voted for it once it was clear it was already going to pass.

If you believe this writer, then she didn't make her preference clear until the last moment.

I dispute that because he's running for President it is politicall expedient to support this bill. Not only is this a fairly low-profile case (on a mainstream level), but it serves to undermine his status as a "truth teller".

Are we supposed to believe that he'll stand up for what he believes once he gets elected, but for the time being he has to immunize himself from criticism that he's soft? Lame.

Once again, we get to watch two assholes fight for the "middle" - which used to be called the right.

It seems clear that O's strategists don't think it's a minor issue and that it would harm his chances vs. McCain's War Hero Candidacy to appear lax in any way on security. I think it is undermining his credibility, absolutely, at the same time that it crushes basic rights. But someone, somewhere has obviously convinced him this is necessary to win the election. That may be a false assumption, of course, and I certainly wish Obama were willing to resist that pressure and explain effectively to the public why the bill is bogus (something that would be possible, I think).

presidential politics is different than anything else, and his position as a 'truth teller' is relative as he is a politician.
