Original Fool
While Enjoying my first listen to Alvy's incomparable Summer Gold 10 a few weeks back, I became fixated on "Whenever I call You Friend". Its a song I've known all my life, but I never realized that it was Kenny Loggins and Stevie Nicks singing. The track sent me off on one of those stream-of-consciousness internet journeys and I ended up on the wiki page for Nightwatch, Kenny Loggins' 2nd album from 1978, on which the aforementioned tune opens side 2.
I noticed in the tracklisting that the third track on side two was "What a Fool Believes", which was credited to Loggins and Michael McDonald. I bought the track immediately to check it out and have included it here for your enjoyment. It's Carribean funk vibe pales in comparison to the Doobie Brothers version we all know, but its a curiosity worthy of a listen to those like me who've been obsessed with the song since 2nd grade.

You are a yacht rock Sherlock Holmes, Simo. I mean that in the most unironic way possible.
On a tangent, from the "What A Fool Believes" Wikipedia page (yes, it has its OWN page, which it richly deserves):
"Michael Jackson claimed to have contributed at least one backing track to the original Doobie Brothers recording, but was not credited for having done so."
To add even more intrigue, there is a footnote to that claim which is a youtube link, but the video has been taken down for "use violation"...which means there is a video of Jacko saying that? Which his estate demanded removed???
The possibilities here are endless gold.
The Lads could do a mockumentary just on What a Fool Believes with all this.
Alright, gotta get back to work, this is far too amusing.
ps is that Nightwatch photo one you took, Simo? I see it's a real LP sitting on the floor. Muy curioso.
Nope, not my photo, though i wish that album was on my living room floor
Wasn't "What a fool believes?" on a previous Summer Gold compilation?
It was on SG09. And it still rules.
Why don't i have summer jams 2010????
Cuz you don't know how to use e-mail.
I've had this record for years and I've never listed to i once. Shout out to Japayan.
"it."
12 commadgies.
I'll translate my earlier comments:
What I meant to say is that these two songs are at the foundation of my music appreciation - they are my JAMZ! As we all know, "adult contemporary circa 1980" is my genre of choice. Thanks for posting it:)
