Daily Download - Alvy Presents Mingus

Back in the Claremont days, Simo introduced me to this terrific record, Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus. In typically bizarre Mingus style, the band is in the studio, but pretending to be in a nightclub, punctuating each song with comments like "Good evening Ladies & Gentlemen, thanks for not rattling the ice in your glasses," etcetera.

Of particular note is this vocal version of "Fables of Faubus", retitled "Original Faubus Fables". This track made it on to Mingus' celebrated Mingus Ah Um LP, but Columbia Records refused to allow the lyrics mocking the former six-term Arkansas governor Orval Faubus, who famously fought against the desegregation of Arkansas schools. Both versions are great, but this one is sublime.

And that's one to grow on!
